The Last Savanna is a gritty thrilling mystery. While I like the the writing style and the story line,I found the book much too violent for my tastes. But I guess that is the way of life in the Savanna!
A Historical Fiction, the Story takes place in the Appalachians of North Carolina in the 1940s. This book is beautifully written with a plot that grabbed me from the first word and well developed characters that I fell in love with. When you look at the cover of this book don't let it fool you! The cover does not do the book justice!
Not my usual type of read, but I try to stretch my
"reading muscles" occasionally to keep from getting
bored and this was an interesting pick! Some of it
was a bit beyond my understanding and the timeline
jumps around a bit, but it was very well written,
flowed well and combined fact and fiction in a
believable manner. The story line combines a mixture
of fantasy, science fiction, history, and drama.
The characters are based on real people, were
plentiful and well balanced.. Has everything
fans of this genre look for and I recommend it!
Barbara Claypole White writes a glaring, touching, raw book that takes a look into OCD mental illness that most of us have never heard of. I knew about hand washing and repetitive things people were driven to do, even to the point of not being able to leave their homes. But never have I heard of Harm OCD...such severe OCD where you fear you will do harm to a loved one. Her descriptive writing of the struggles the main characters go through to deal with their mental illnesse, almost made me anxious they felt so real! I applaud the way she handled such a troubling topic, while leading us to learn about this side of mental illness. The writing was so very well done and I am in love with all the characters in this book! Such strong fighters who all have a common goal in mind....helping a young girl learn to conquer her OCD. Also the lessons of communication and forgiveness ......not just forgiveness toward others, but toward ourselves was an important lesson to me.I would give this book a ten if I could!!!
Has everything I love in one book! Quirky characters, humor, beautiful scenery, yummy food, murder and mayhem....... All wrapped up in an interesting plot! Aunt Poldi decides to retire to Sicily on her sixtieth birthday, after dealing with her fair share of pain and heartbreak. She wants to relax there, with the remaining days she has left, by drinking herself into a stupor and enjoying the view of the sea. But life has other plans! Her handyman is mysteriously found dead on the beach, and she gets swept up in a murder investigation. I love the beautiful descriptions of Sicily, and the food and coffee made me drool! I loved all the interesting characters and her interactions with them. It's a laugh out loud good time!
